Course Description for Fall and Spring – Study of the Gospel of John: The symbol of St. John the Evangelist is an eagle. According to St. Thomas Aquinas, this is because John, through his Gospel, exposes the good news of Jesus Christ’s Divinity to all those able to see it—for the writings of John sore above the heights of human contemplation rising beyond what is fleshy to what is spiritual (1 Corinthians 2:14). In this 24-lecture study of the Gospel of John, we will try to ascend these heights and read scripture as the Church Fathers and Medieval Scholastics would have read scripture. The overall goal of this study is to first grow in love for the Word of God, second to practice integrating study and prayer, and third to understand John’s Gospel as both John and the Divine author intended.
